Women Training for Combat Filed under DoD News, Wednesday Warfighter By Gary Sheftick, Army News Service WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Army announced its intent to open six occupational specialties and more than 13,000 positions to women. These six military occupational specialties, or MOSs, were previously closed to women because they were normally co-located with direct combat units: – 13M Multiple Launch Rocket System crewmember– 13P MLRS Operations/Fire Direction Specialist– 13R Field Artillery Firefinder Radar Operator Specialist– 91A M1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer– 91M Bradley Fighting Vehicle System Maintainer– 91P Artillery Mechanic DOD officials said at a Pentagon press conference Thursday afternoon that they have notified Congress of their intent to open these MOSs to women, and the change will become effective after 30 days of continuous Congressional session, as required by law. This is expected to occur later in the spring, said Maj. Gen. Gary Patton, principal director for DOD Military Personnel Policy. In addition, officials announced that another 1,186 positions at battalion level would be opened to women in the Army, Marine Corps and Navy. These are in specialties already filled by women, but only at the brigade or higher level. The 1994 DOD policy known as the Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule had prohibited women from serving in combat units below the brigade level. But the secretary of Defense has now granted an exception to policy to allow women to serve in some positions in combat units at the battalion level. The six specialties previously barred to women were due to the “co-location” element of the 1994 policy. That provision has restricted women from serving in MOSs that by doctrine are located with combat units. DOD intends to eliminate the “co-location” provision due to the non-linear and fluid nature of today’s battlefield where there often is no front line, said Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Military Personnel Policy Virginia “Vee” Penrod.“The battle space we have experienced in Afghanistan and Iraq require our forces to be distributed across the country,” Penrod said. “There is no rear area that exists in this battle space. Continuing to restrict positions as solely on being co-located with direct combat units has become irrelevant.”Patton said it may take some time to recruit and train women in the six specialties where they haven’t served before. Training them as tank mechanics, for instance, will take longer than placing them at battalion level in MOSs they already know, he said. Women will be placed in the new positions as men are scheduled to rotate out, Patton said. A normal rotation schedule will be followed and men will not leave the positions earlier than expected, he said. About 280,000 positions across the services remain closed to women due to the combat exclusion policy. After six months, DOD will assess the feedback from women serving in the new positions and use the information to take another look at the suitability and relevance of the direct ground combat unit assignment prohibition, Penrod said. This is the beginning of the end” of the combat exclusion policy, she added.“We recognize the expanded role of women in the military,” Patton said. “I’ve seen women in combat perform in an expanded role. I’m very proud of them.”

M. Speaker:

I rise to take strong exception to the speech of the President of Mexico while in this chamber today.

The Mexican government has made it very clear for many years that it holds American sovereignty in contempt and President Calderons behavior as a guest of the Congress confirms and underscores this attitude.

It is highly inappropriate for the President of Mexico to lecture Americans on American immigration policy, just as it would be for Americans to lecture Mexico on its laws.

It is obvious that President Calderon does not understand the nature of America or the purpose of our immigration law.

Unlike Mexico's immigration law -- which is brutally exclusionary -- the purpose of Americas law is not to keep people out. It is to assure that as people come to the United States, they do so with the intention of becoming Americans and of raising their children as Americans.

Unlike Mexico, our nation embraces immigration and what makes that possible is assimilation.

A century ago President Teddy Roosevelt put it this way. He said:

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

That is how we have built one great nation from the people of all the nations of the world.

The largest group of immigrants now comes from Mexico. A recent RAND discovered that during most of the 20th Century, while our immigration laws were actually enforced, assimilation worked and made possible the swift attainment of the American dream for millions of immigrants seeking to escape conditions in Mexico.

That is the broader meaning of our nations motto, e pluribus unum from many people, one people, the American people.

But there is now an element in our political structure that seeks to undermine that concept of E Pluribus Unum. It seeks to hyphenate Americans, to develop linguistic divisions, to assign rights and preferences based on race and ethnicity, and to elevate devotion to foreign ideologies and traditions, while at the same time denigrating American culture, American values and American founding principles.

In order to do so, they know that they have to stop the process of assimilation. In order to do that, they must undermine our immigration laws.

It is an outrage that a foreign head of state would appear in this chamber and actively seek to do so. And it is a disgrace that he would be cheered on from the left wing of the White House and by many Democrats in this Congress.

Arizona has not adopted a new immigration law. All it has done is to enforce existing law that President Obama refuses to enforce. It is hardly a radical policy to suggest that if an officer on a routine traffic stop encounters a driver with no drivers license, no passport, and who doesnt speak English, that maybe that individual might be here illegally.

And to those who say we must reform our immigration laws I reply that we dont need to reform them we need to enforce them. Just as every other government does. Just as Mexico does.

Above all, this is a debate of, by and for the American people. If President Calderon wishes to participate in that debate, I invite him to obey our immigration laws, apply for citizenship, do what 600,000 LEGAL immigrants to our nation are doing right now, learn our history and our customs, and become an American. And then he will have every right to participate in that debate.

Until then, I would politely invite him to have the courtesy while a guest of this Congress to abide by the fundamental rules of diplomacy between civilized nations not to meddle in each others domestic debates.

It’s up to parents to teach their children responsibility, discipline, and self-control. Not McDonald’s. And not government. Big Brother is big enough.
And, so, they’ve outlawed Happy Meals and other similar promotions by fast food restaurants, which they say entice kids to nag their parents into buying them unhealthy food. So what? It’s called marketing. It’s a form of free speech protected by the U.S. Constitution. When I was a kid I nagged my parents to buy me things, too. And they often said the one word parents today won’t: NO.
Is that McDonald’s fault? Is it Happy Meals’ fault? No. It’s the fault of lazy parents who won’t say no. Lazy parents who use TV, videos, and computers to raise their kids. Parents who have no sense of what it takes to be a parent. A parent who won’t say no to a Happy Meal because their kid wants a cute toy is a parent who will tolerate drug use, sex at an early age, and bad academics by their kid. And the Supervisors of Santa Clara reward that bad parenting, that laziness, that unwillingness of parents to turn down their kids’ every whim and wish, lest they experience some temporary whining or crying.
Happy Meal toys and other promotions that come with high-calorie children’s meals will soon be banned in parts of Santa Clara County unless the restaurants meet nutritional guidelines approved Tuesday by the county Board of Supervisors.

Holm is credited as the single driving force in achieving equality for military women and making them a viable part of the mainstream military. She was a champion of diversity and advocate for equal rights for women.Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and other senior leaders, active and retired, attended the funeral ceremony and internment.After the service and burial, members of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial hosted a wake where friends and family members shared stories about the general."It's fitting that we're here remembering her," said retired Col. Yvonne Schilz in reference to the Women in Airforce Service Pilots display at the memorial. "Where the WASP cracked the glass ceiling, Jeanne blew it open for the rest of us. I was able to attend the Air Force Academy because of what she did."In some way, we just all want to give back to her, so this felt like the right place to be today," Colonel Schilz added.Retired Brig. Gen. Wilma Vaught echoed the colonel's sentiments."She made my career in the Air Force possible," said General Vaught, president of the board of directors of the Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, Inc. "She definitely knew how to get things done and it was amazing to see her work."General Vaught shared several of her memories of her friend Jeanne, who was partially responsible for the creation of the women's memorial. "She wanted to write a book about women in the military," General Vaught said. "In truth, she already had a lot of the work done."General Holm authored two books: "Women in the Military: An Unfinished Revolution," which came out in 1982 and was updated in 1994; and four years later she wrote "In Defense of a Nation: Servicewomen in World War II."During her 31-year career, General Holm accomplished much.The Portland, Ore., native attained the rank of two-star general in 1973 after a career that began in 1942 when she enlisted in the Army. General Holm entered Women's Army Air Corps in January 1943 where she received a commission as third officer, the WAAC equivalent of second lieutenant. General Holm also became the first woman to attend the Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1952.She was promoted to brigadier general July 16, 1971, the first female Airman to be appointed to that grade. She was subsequently promoted to the grade of major general effective June 1, 1973, with date of rank of July 1, 1970, the first woman in the armed forces to serve in that grade.In recognition of General Holm's pioneering career, Air Force officials renamed the Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools at Maxwell AFB the Jeanne M. Holm Officer Accession and Citizen Development Center in June 2008. Its mission is Air Force officer recruitment and training within the Air University. During World War II, General Holm was assigned to the Women's Army Corps Training Center at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., where she first commanded a basic training company and then a training regiment. At the end of the war, she commanded the 106th WAC Hospital Company at Newton D. Baker General Hospital, W.Va. She then left active military duty in 1946.In October 1948 during the Berlin crisis, she was recalled to active duty with the Army and went to Camp Lee, Va., as a company commander. The following year she transferred to the Air Force, when a new law integrated women in the regular armed forces.General Holm served in a variety of personnel assignments, including director of Women in the Air Force from 1965 to 1973. She played a significant role in eliminating restrictions on numbers of women serving in all ranks, expanding job and duty station assignments for women, opening ROTC and service academies to women and changing the policies on the status of women in the armed forces. During her tenure, policies affecting women were updated, WAF strength more than doubled, job and assignment opportunities expanded and uniforms modernized.The general retired in 1975. Editor’s Note: The following is an open letter from actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who penned this response to actor Sean Penn’s recent remarks on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” in which the left-wing actor defended Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez.
Dear Sean, WHY?
Even though I have great respect for your artistic talent, I was appalled by a recent television interview where you vigorously showed support for the regime of Hugo Chavez. Therefore, I’ve decided to set the record straight for you regarding the Chavez regime, supporting my case based not only on my political ideologies, but on proven facts you choose to ignore. Otherwise, I believe your position would be different.
Being born in Cuba, a country where freedom of speech is non-existent, it’s startling to observe how Venezuela, where I was happily raised, is fast becoming Cuba’s mirror image: Dismantling of fundamental democratic rights deserved by its people and citizens of the world.
For example, you said that all Chavez-winning elections in Venezuela were “transparent.”
Then WHY didn’t the government allow a manual recount of the votes and computer information when doubt set in? After all, how do you explain how these votes that were strongly favoring the opposition mysteriously reflected the opposite results the morning after, thus permitting Chavez to continue on? On what are you basing your conclusions? I strongly recommend that you read a report by the U.S. State Department written in 2009 entitled “The Fraudulent Elections in Venezuela”.
We live in a Republic comprised of three autonomous branches of government: Supreme Court, Congress and Executive, thus, a true democracy.
Then WHY do you accept violations by part of the government of Venezuela to ignore its Constitution whereby one man, military-educated Chavez, controls all branches of government? His military background is revealed by his philosophy: “I order, you obey and if you disagree you’re a traitor to the country.” And your voice is silenced along with the ability of freethinking. Did you know solely the government controls 92% of media communications?
You’ve strongly criticized your own governments’ overspending and corruption, whereby the budget for We the people never ends up in the hands of those who need it most.
Then WHY do you support a government with over $100 million in oil revenue that has 71% poverty? Or don’t you know that corruption is so rampant that the rightfully deserving poor never sees a “red cent”? In addition, the fact is that Chavez gives away millions of dollars; belonging to the Venezuelan people, to other countries in order to build a false sense of philanthropy of a man whose self-proclaiming ego is blinded by power behind a communist Cuban-style revolution, expanding such regime.
We live in the U.S.A., the land of opportunity to do and say what we desire, respecting dissenting points of view, of course and without reprisals.
Then WHY do you defend a government whose stronghold upon its people is so oppressive that a big price is paid for exercising freedom of speech: Persecutions, closing of radio and television stations, jail…and even death?
You are fortunate enough to live in a country where you can buy property and claim it as your own to do whatever you want with it.
Then WHY do you promote the interests of a government that violates the Constitution by hindering the possibility of development: Land, industries, commerce, communications companies, foreign investment opportunities, financial institutions and private property? This is an everyday scenario in Venezuela.
Then WHY haven’t you informed yourself on these facts by reading Venezuelan and international newspapers exposing thousands of cases?
Given your sense of community and respect for all people, I think you would defend the security of the citizens in your country.
Then WHY do you validate a government that has converted Venezuela into the second most dangerous country in the world, where impunity is above 90% and its people live in a constant state of stress and fear of getting killed? Many wonder if this situation isn’t but a diabolic strategy by the part of the government, something to think about. Do you know that the weekend of March 13th there were 67 counted homicides only in Caracas? Furthermore, in the first 50 days of this year, there have been 140 express kidnappings for fast money (a 50% increase in 2009 versus previous years). After 11 years of the Chavez government, more than 16,000 people has been murdered by armed gangs and we’re not even at war like in the Middle East.
In the U.S.A. the arm of the law comes down hard on government or private sector where cases of fraud and corruption are discovered.
Then WHY do you defend a politician who promised to sweep corruption, but has ended up sponsoring illicit enrichment by part of his closest allies and civil servants, placing Venezuela as the most corrupt country in the Americas and in its political history? Corruption has increased 68% and inflation 31% in 2009. What a coincidence, Sean that the majority of those “corruptors” are members of the government you have chosen to embrace.
You’ve demonstrated admirable assistance to those in need, due to natural disasters or poverty, those with desperate pleas to get their misfortune exposed for the whole world to see.
Then WHY do you applaud the efforts of a government that has notoriously increased poverty (65% to 71%), produced scarcity of staple products and created an energy and water shortage crisis never seen in Venezuela? Not to mention the numbers of children begging in the streets. You may have missed it because the government tends to take the scenic routes for its guests. I invite you see the real Venezuela, stay for a couple of weeks without the logistics the government of said country organizes for you and you’ll be amazed with the results in your unaided observations.
Sean, you live in a country where your parents had the freedom to teach you principles and respect for entities and human beings, where education hasn’t been manipulated by political agendas of those in power.
Then WHY are you in favor of a country where day after day education isn’t plural by obligating a single-minded agenda and lack of respect for family structure? Did you know Sean that in Venezuela there is political indoctrination at a very early age, better known as “brainwashing”? And let me tell you that if parents don’t agree, they will lose custody of their children, just like in Cuba, a country you’ve placed on a pedestal.
You are a product of a Jewish father.
Then WHY is your fascination with a government that has overtly stated its hatred against the Jewish community worldwide, to the extent that the State of Israel condemned anti-Semitic attacks in Venezuela? Do you think it’s fair that many Jewish-Venezuelan families have emigrated because the Chavez government robbed their personal files when their temples and offices were under attacked in 2008?
I don’t think so, Sean, that you would support violence as a means to impose your agenda.
Then WHY do you support a government with close relationships with FARC, ETA, Cuban G-2, Government of Iran, Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah, among others, which are the most feared terrorist movements in the world?
You have said that you applaud the actions that Chavez has instituted for his “pueblo”.
Then WHY do you back him up when he himself has recently publicly recognized his failure for effective social programs (missions) in the areas of education, social service and hospitals; where each day the number of the uncared rises for lack of appropriate facilities and respective upkeep, and a country where the mothers give birth in the streets? This you can see on YouTube in investigative programs run on German, Swedish, Italian and Spanish television stations.
Sean, have you considered researching the existence of the growing list of political prisoners, including journalists, on your own? For your information Chile, Peru and Costa Rica has that data. Furthermore, many of these prisoners are tortured and their families persecuted and threatened, just like the Cuba you stand up for.
Is that what you support when you publicly declare that all those that say that Chavez is a dictator should go to jail?
Sean, you have the right to say what you want, but as far as I know, your statements are contradictory to “Freedom of Speech”, the same one you enjoy in this country; by coincidence, “The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.”
My intention isn’t to convince you, but to let you know what is truly happening in this beautiful country of noble people, Venezuela. I would encourage you to investigate in depth the “inside story” and realize for yourself the dark side behind the person you choose to idolize.
Agreed, Chavez did win his first elections, but like Hitler, he betrayed what the country gave him: The vote of confidence.

'Davy Crockett' Star Fess Parker Dead at 85

Fess Parker, the actor who helped launch the Davy Crockett craze in the 1950s by playing the famed frontiersman in numerous Disney productions, died Thursday of natural causes, his rep confirms . He was 85. Born in Texas, Parker was perfectly suited to play Crockett, and kids around the country clamored to get their hands on coon skin caps because of him.Parker played the character in a popular TV series and later a pair of feature-length films. He portrayed Crockett from his days as a Tennessee lawmaker to his death at the Battle of the Alamo. U.S. Air Force Nurse, Lucy Lehker, comforts an 'unknown' Canadian soldier after he was badly wounded in Afghanistan.
Dear Michael Yon,
Today we were sent your story of February 14, 2010. The “unknown” Canadian is our son Danny. He is a 23-year-old soldier from Vancouver, Canada.
Your photographs were extraordinary and have impacted so many people here in Canada. There has been an outpouring of affection for the Americans who helped Danny in his moment of need. For that, we thank you for recording these acts of kindness into history.Danny's injuries were the result of an explosion on February 12, 2010. Four Canadian soldiers were injured and tragically one Canadian soldier was killed. Within 20 minutes of the explosion, Danny was airlifted by helicopter to Kandahar. Upon arrival he received emergency surgery that saved his life and prepared him for the flight to Bagram that you were on.
After landing in Bagram, Danny was again airlifted by a US transport aircraft to the US Army run Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. There he underwent additional surgery that closed up his wounds. Once stabilized, the Canadian government dispatched a Challenger jet to bring him home. This afternoon in Vancouver, the shrapnel that did all the damage to him was finally removed. Danny is now recovering in hospital.
This was Danny's second tour of duty in Afghanistan and his platoon on this tour has had heavy causalities and injuries. Physically, Danny will overcome his injuries. He also has the support of his family, his friends and his community to deal with the emotional side of this war. Our hearts go out to those families who have had the loss of a soldier or who have had to deal with greater injuries.
Danny and his whole family are very grateful, and are actually overwhelmed, by the support he received while in US care. The Canadian military have also been wonderful. It is our intention to personally thank everyone who worked so hard to save Danny's life. We have already made contact with Major Deborah "Lucy" Lehker to thank her.

(Jan. 20) -- The first time U.S. Marines landed in Haiti, they stayed nearly 20 years. It was 1915, and President Woodrow Wilson dispatched 330 Marines to "re-establish peace and order" after the Caribbean nation saw six presidents in four years either killed or forced into exile. The U.S. occupied Haiti until 1934. American troops returned in 1994 in an ultimately abortive attempt by then-President Bill Clinton to reinstall Haiti's exiled president to power.Now the Marines are back for a very different mission.

Black Hawk helicopters whirred down onto the manicured lawn of Haiti's presidential palace Tuesday, delivering hundreds of U.S. troops who have transformed the National Palace into an earthquake aid depot in the center of Port-au-Prince. About 12,000 American troops are already on the ground or anchored offshore, organizing everything from aid drops to air traffic. But for some skeptics of American power, the image of U.S. soldiers taking over the wrecked symbol of Haiti's sovereignty conjures less than favorable comparisons to other places where America has used its military might -- Iraq, Afghanistan and the like. France's international cooperation minister, Alain Joyandet, even accused Washington of trying to "occupy" Haiti and urged the United Nations to investigate. His comments were not without irony. Haiti's particular agony is grounded at least in part in France's own brutal colonization and exploitation of its inhabitants for more than a century, ending in a bloody slave revolt in 1804. Joyandet complained after a French aid flight carrying a field hospital was turned back from Port-au-Prince's overtaxed airport last week. The angry minister reportedly got into a physical confrontation with the U.S. official in charge of air traffic control. The French plane landed safely the next day.French President Nicolas Sarkozy intervened quickly, praising Washington's "exceptional mobilization" and "essential role ... on the ground" in Haiti. But the whole row was embarrassing, especially with so many Haitians still suffering.Other prominent U.S. critics have voiced similar, if predictable, concerns. In his weekly television address, Venezuela's Hugo Chávez accused the U.S. of "occupying Haiti in an undercover manner."In another incident that illustrates the chaos at Haiti's airport, American forces initially blocked French and Canadian citizens from boarding evacuation flights over the weekend. Their governments complained, and the cordon was lifted.On the Haitian side, government officials pleaded for U.S. help and throngs of survivors cheered when American helicopters ferried hundreds of soldiers onto the palace grounds. People who have gone eight days without food or water have far more pressing concerns than politics. "We are happy they are coming, because we have so many problems," hairdresser Fede Felissaint told a Scottish newspaper reporter in Port-au-Prince. He said he did not mind that U.S. troops were taking up positions at the palace. "If they want, they can stay longer than in 1915," Felissaint said, smiling.
But American officials say that's not their intention. "There have been some reports and news stories out there that the U.S. is invading Haiti," U.S. Army Col. Gregory Kane told reporters in Port-au-Prince. "We're not invading Haiti. That's ludicrous. This is humanitarian relief."Officials estimate that the death toll from last week's devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake could reach 200,000. The Red Cross says about 3 million Haitians -- a third of the country's population -- are still in need.Those trying to help in Haiti are working in tough conditions, and tempers are bound to flare. But there's little reason to question U.S. motives in Haiti. President Obama dispatched Navy ships and U.S. troops because they can mobilize more quickly than private aid groups in times of disaster. On a weekend visit to Haiti, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. has no intention of taking power from Haitian officials. "We are working to back them up, but not to supplant them," she said.Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who reviewed rules of engagement for U.S. troops in Haiti, said Americans were chiefly involved in distributing relief supplies and wouldn't take on a robust policing role. "Anywhere we deploy our troops, they have the authority and the right to defend themselves," Gates told reporters traveling with him on an official visit to India. But he said troops could also defend others "if they see something happen."The U.K.'s Telegraph newspaper quoted unnamed U.S. soldiers in Port-au-Prince as saying they'd been told to be discreet about how they carry their M-4 assault rifles.Still, with the U.N. struggling to find staffers buried in the ruins of its collapsed headquarters in Haiti, aid groups have given the U.S. almost unanimous support in leading aid efforts."America has both the geographical proximity and resources to lead this relief effort," said Caroline Saunders, director of Jubilee Action, a British charity that's been working in Haiti since 2008. "By using U.S. helicopters, aid is finally beginning to reach the devastated areas of Port-au-Prince, where thousands have been without access to food and water for over a week."With most aid workers and Haitians lining up behind U.S. leadership, is Joyandet just a lone French official whose nerves got frazzled and misspoke? Or do his comments reveal something deeper about the way the world sees America's military power?Would he have said the same thing if it had been another country -- say, Germany or Brazil -- organizing air traffic in Port-au-Prince? Underlying the episode is a tangible sense of hurt pride that France -- Haiti's former colonial master -- is relegated to a secondary role there while U.S. officials take charge. France has long regarded Haiti as part of its own sphere of influence, and French is still the official language there. Regardless, Joyandet's comments have stoked ire among Americans proud of what their military is doing in Haiti. "One has to wonder if Minister Alain Joyandet perceived the U.S. Army as an occupying force in France in 1944-1945 when it liberated his country," wrote Tim McDonald, a columnist for Indiana's News and Tribune newspapers. In the end, Sarkozy and other French officials seem to have silenced Joyandet for now, and American officials are defending the role their troops are playing in Haiti. They all seem determined to disprove French philosopher Voltaire's observation that "opinions have caused more ills than the plague or earthquakes on this little globe of ours."

Why hypocritical you may ask? The North Star Points True North
Knowing how to find the north star in the northern hemisphere is one of the most basic survival skills.
Those of us in the north are fortunate to have the North Star as a handy survival tool for determining direction without a compass. Visible from the surface of the earth during clear nights, nearly everybody has heard of this celestial body and most probably feel confident they would be able to find the North Star whenever they choose.
For many thousands of years Polaris has been used as a guiding star and reference point for navigators and astronomers. Through experience and observation wayfarers discovered the North Star lights the way to true north.
In ancient times locating this lodestar was crucial to navigating long distances through the wilderness. The beauty of using the north star for navigation is that unlike a magnetic compass the north star always points to to true north. There is no magnetic declination to deal with.

North Star Location
By shear luck, the northern axis of the earth points directly toward the North Star. This means that when you are observing this star you are facing true north toward the North Pole. Because of this we also call the North Star the Polestar or Polaris, its astronomic name.
When you are facing the North Star you are looking toward true north. This is because by chance this lodestar lines up with the celestial sphere almost perfectly, so that all other stars appear to rotate around it. Simply by finding the North Star travelers are able to determine all the points of the compass: westward would be on your left, eastward to the right, and southward in back of you.
Do You Know Where the North Star Is?
Experience has shown that knowing about and reliably locating the North Star in the night sky are two different things. Being lost in the wilderness without a compass is not the time to be trying to figure out where the northern polestar is.
You need to know where the north star is before it is a matter of survival.
Many people erroneously think the North Star is one of the brightest stars in the sky and so is easy to find. In actuality the star is not so outstanding in its order of magnitude, or brightness, which is about average when compared to all the other stars in the celestial sphere.
Finding the Big Dipper is Key to Finding the North Star
The key to locating the North Star in the night sky is to first find the Big Dipper, a constellation of stars known as Ursa Major (the dippers are not a true constellations. They are groups of stars known as asterisms located within a constellation). The Big Dipper is perhaps the best known group of stars in the northern sky and is easy to distinguish from all others. Also known as the Great Bear, the Big Dipper is located just north of the celestial pole. Knowing how to find the Big Dipper makes it easy to find the north star.
The second key to finding the North Star is a similarly shaped constellation of stars known as the Little Dipper. The Little Dipper, also known as Ursa Minor, is smaller and more difficult to find in the night sky. Fortunately its big brother the Big Dipper points the way.
The PoleStar we are seeking is the brightest of the Little Dipper stars and is located at the tip of the dipper’s handle.
Directions To Find the North Star
Locate the Big Dipper in the northern sky. Knowing how to find the Big Dipper is easy due to its large size and distinct shape. Depending upon the time of the year constellation of stars may be tipped in different directions as it rotates around the polestar.
As shown in the diagram, locate the two stars that form the outer edge of the Big Dipper.
Draw an imaginary line straight through the two stars of the dipper edge and toward the Little Dipper. The line will point very close to the handle of the Little Dipper.
The brightest star in the Little Dipper is at the end of its handle. This is the North Star.
Congratulations, you now know how to find the North Star, Polestar, or Lodestar.

When you have found the north star you can also use it to determine your latitude north of the equator. Simply measure the angle formed between the horizon and the polestar. And there you have it!

Long Overdue Recognition - Congratulations!

On Wednesday, July 1, President Obama signed bill S.614 to award the Congressional Medal of Honeor to the WASP. This is long overdue recognition of their service to our country and well deserved. Congratulations ladies! Bee Haydu was there for the signing along with Elaine Danforth Harmon, Lorraine H. Rodgers and current Air Force pilots.
It is likely that the official cermony will not happen for another several months since they have to make the actal medal

only things missing is a cold beer & friends..and me....would love to spend time with friends (family too) on a nice warm sandy beach just hanging out...

but life seems to get in the way...than one day it's too late..too old, ill or friends are gone.. (family too), sure we need to make a living , keep your nose to the grind stone but while people are out making a living are they really enjoying living...it's not a deep question..luckly we are still in touch with friends from almost 39 years ago, we don't get to see each other as we'd like but with phones,e-mail and lets not forget snail mail, there is no reason not to be in each others lifes...this past summer we were lucky enough to take a trip with a group and it was FUN..and we talked about doing it again next year but this time rent a van or take a RV, so we can ride together ...just because someone is miles away (or just a few) don't let than slip away....so why not call a friend, drop them a e-mail, heck add a picture or even write a letter..just say HELLO

just got back from the gym, haven't been too much in August maybe 4 times & didn't go to aerobics at all..now that my excuses are in order...my aerobics class kick my a**, half way thur my shoulders were screaming "Stop, what are you crazy..this burning feeling you like it?" but I pushed on, I wasn't going to let the other ladies out do me...right before we started to cool down I swear I heard mybody cry..it was soft at 1st but as I cooled down ..yup there was crying..but I finished.."take that you you skinny bitchies"...as we were leaving it may me feel good to hear the others complaining...knees & hips (some about knees & hip replacements) , arthritis and about there AARP memebership...gee what bunch of whiners (spelled right ?)

hello, I want to lament the car...today I park my car in the lot came out there was 2 silver cars next to a truck (also silver) , as I walk towards my car there was someone sitting in it. just as I was going to ask "what the hell are you doing in my car" (in a nice way) I relalized that wasn't my car..well I said opps wrong car ..so what's my point..cars have no longer any character. most poeple can't tell a Caddie from Chevy. Back in the days you could spot a car from a block away & know what kind, hell even what year sometime...as a kid sitting on Ocean View ave in Norfolk Va (on the curb..not in the street, I have done that but that's another story) "playing license plate tag" or "that's my car"...big fins, character, big & build like a tank..huge headlights. Now cars today are small,light weight, bland...oh sure you can buy a Hummer, Ferrari, Mini Cooper Mustang brought back the old stlye...no car's today are lame...or maybe the answer is I should wear glasses...

this picture reminds me of my childhood in Norfolk Va, expect my dad didn't have gray hair, hell he didn't have hair but he did wear khaki pants..most of you know I grew up on the East coast & God's country Minnesota.. came to Ca half way thur 5th grade...Oaktown baby..wow what a culture shock I had....what I want to blog about is all the supply we have to buy...or the so-called donation, every year we get long list of stuff and 50 % of the time my kid don't use it...his chemistry list they want a scientifie calculator.. my 1st question was "what the hell is a scientife calculator" I told him to use his cell phone..later I learn from a knowledgeable source what it was & did..cost $110.00...on top of note books binders,plus $35.00 donation in cooking class (thank God his not into music or sports) . Don't get me wrong I'll get the stuff but it has to wait till payday..than it's beans for the week...how do families wth more than one kid do it...yeah I'm ranting but guess what it's my blog and I'll rant if I want to...when I was in school we got pencils, paper,glue (the kind that smelled like pepermint & tasted good) , we'd have 30 to 35 kids in class and your teacher would bust your ass when you did wrong & than when you got home your mom and or dad would get you...you could play tag not this asinine air tag, you would hit that kid..sometime you got knock down..kids fell off rings, cried got up and went on playing..when i went to schol in White Bear Lake you played in the snow, snowball fights (sometimes a ice ball..ouch) you come into class hang your coats on the radiator and when you got ready to go home the coats would be damp but you put them on anyway..so what I'm I saying...what I'm I saying? Do you remember menigraph (spelled right?) paper...oo the smell, come you know you use to sniff the fresh ones...& what about when you went to the gas station, the old time gas smell..hell who need drugs...

Sometimes the picture will have something to do with the blog other times just there...todays kinda writes it own blog.....we all have done it, said something, not say something and the next thing you know..boom you're there, wondering how it happend and now what to do...sure you're always surpose to tell the truth...but what is the truth. your truth maybe different than mine or someone else... or sometimes people put you there..So the big question is ???? change of subject..just got back from taking my son in for sign in at school, as he couldn't make the actual school date..still with me?? any way we were told a parent had to bring the student with all paperwork..well forget that half the kids were alone (now I understand people have to work so OK ) and most of them didn't even have thier paperwork...so us who followed the rules get stuck behind these kids who seem to have real bad attitude..(I know everyou blames it on them being teenagers..bullshit) When I asked one office worker who was running around about the no show & missing paperwork..I was told the principal said it was OK. SO why am I & the other parents doing there so early in the morning??? Aren't we rewarding those who can't get there shit together...I'm thinking about writing a note to the school but lets be honest they won't give a shit because there is money to be paid...Why am I swearing because I can and sometimes it's appropriate...

It's 2 am and I can't sleep, it happens once in awhile, for what ever reason I find my self wide awake till who knows when...school starts 4 days looking forward to a good year, hopefully teacher & student can work together, not all kids are great students..heck they may not be good students..grade wise I mean. Schools need to go back to basics, like bussiness math, you know how to balance a check book, make change and what about life skills. Not every kid is going to college even Jr college and that should be OK. I think it a good idea to help point out what students need for college but just the other in the paper it talked about stating in the 6th & 7th grade what they should do & take to prepare for college...come on WOW....glad I'm not in school now...let's get real people...some kids will end up being trades people, retail, armed services,

cooks because that how the real world is...sure we should help our kids to do their best but we also need to accept them for who they are...oh well what the hell do I know...it's 2:30 & I'm hungry..don't eat don't eat...trying to get in shape..think of my hips...take till we meet again..
